Bears Advance In All-American Qualifying
TULSA, Okla. – Back in the city where they ended last season, three of the Golden Bears posted wins to advance in singles and doubles in the qualifying rounds of the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships. In singles, California senior
Filip Bergevi and junior
Billy Griffith moved on to Tuesday's round of 64, while Griffith and senior
Andre Goransson teamed up to advance to Tuesday's round of 16.
Griffith, the seventh seed in qualifying singles who's also ranked 61st in the Oracle/ITA preseason poll, defeated Old Dominion's Aziz Kijametovic, 6-2, 6-0, in the opening round of 128 at Union High School. He'll next face Leonardo Telles of Texas in Tuesday's round of 64. Bergevi knocked off Rice's Jake Hansen, 6-3, 6-1, in the round of 128 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa. The 77th-ranked Bear advanced to play USC's Rob Bellamy on Tuesday.
In qualifying doubles, Goransson and Griffith beat Oklahoma's Florian Bragusi and John Millstead, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(3), in the opening round of 64. The Bears then beat Arkansas' fifth-seeded and 32nd-ranked Michael Redlicki/Adam San Jurjo, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0(4). The Cal duo next faces Ohio State's 43rd-ranked Hugo Di Feo/Martin Joyce on Tuesday.
"We got off to a quick start this morning with Filip and Billy scoring straight-set victories in singles," Cal head coach
Peter Wright said. "Both of them did a good job of controlling the points with their serves and forehands.
"Billy came back in the afternoon for two matches of doubles with
Andre Goransson. In the first match, they struggled to find their rhythm but still managed to pull out a win. Both of them were much more mentally engaged and purposeful with their shots in the second match, and the quality of the tennis was very high. They're really starting to gel as a team."
Qualifying singles and doubles end on Tuesday, with the main draws commencing play on Thursday and ending on Monday, Oct. 10.
Last May in Tulsa, Goransson, Bergevi and Griffith were members of a 2015-16 squad that made Cal's first NCAA Championship semifinal appearance since 1991. Bergevi and current senior
Florian Lakat also played in the NCAA Doubles Championship, advancing as far as the quarterfinal at the Case Tennis Center. Lakat and Goransson fell in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship, which was also in Tulsa.
Also this week, another group of Bears will compete in the UCSB Gaucho Classic, which runs from Friday through Sunday in Santa Barbara, California.
