TULSA, Okla. – California's Filip Bergevi and Billy Griffith qualified for main draw singles on Tuesday at the Saint Francis Health System All-American Championships, while the pair of Griffith and Andre Goransson fell in qualifying doubles at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa.

Bergevi, a senior ranked 77th, knocked off Duke's Robert Levine, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(5), in qualifying singles to advance. A few minutes later, Griffith, a junior seeded seventh and ranked 61st, defeated San Diego's 107th-ranked Filip Vittek, 6-0, 6-3, to join Bergevi as well as Goransson and senior Florian Lakat in the main draw starting Thursday.

"Billy and Filip earned two tough victories today," Cal head coach Peter Wright said. "Filip won a third set tiebreaker in his second match, and he had to dig deep to come up with some big serves, and I was impressed with how he handled the pressure. Billy's matches were a bit more clinical, as he used his impressive consistency on his groundstrokes to stifle his opponents."

Later Tuesday afternoon, Goransson and Griffith took on familiar opponents in Ohio State's 43rd-ranked Hugo Di Feo and Martin Joyce in qualifying doubles. Last May on the same courts in Tulsa, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA team tournament, the Cal pair of current junior J.T. Nishimura and the graduated Mads Engsted beat Di Feo and Matt Mendez, 6-3, while Goransson and current undergraduate assistant coach Oskar Wikberg defeated Joyce and Ralf Steinbach, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point in the Golden Bears' eventual 4-3 upset of No. 5 Ohio State.

This time, the Bears didn't fare as well against the Buckeyes, as Griffith and Goransson lost, 6-3, 6-4.

"Billy and Andre played a very strong Ohio State team, and while they had some opportunities in the second set, they weren't able to consolidate their lead," Wright said. "Overall, I've been impressed with how much they've improved this year."

The Cal pair of Bergevi and Lakat – which reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship last May in Tulsa – has already qualified for the All-American doubles main draw.

Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions from the All-American – which ends next Monday, Oct. 10 – will receive automatic entry into the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 3-6, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
