Starr Splits On Day 1 At All-American
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – California's
Denise Starr suffered an opening-round loss in the qualifying singles draw at the Riviera ITA All-American Championships on Tuesday. But the 62nd-ranked Golden Bear bounced back to win her consolation back-draw opener and advance to Wednesday's round of 16 at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Â
In the qualifying singles round of 64, the Cal senior fell to the Alabama's 33rd-ranked and sixth-ranked Andie Daniell, falling 6-3, 7-5. Starr won later in the day against Wichita State's 74th-ranked Gabriela Porubin, 6-4, 6-1, in the consolation back draw's opening round of 32.
Â
"Denise didn't get the best start she hoped for today," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "But she competed well and worked on what she'd been working on in practice. In her second match she really rebounded well. She nearly had the second set in the first match today but a couple points didn't go her way. She displayed resilience in that second match."
Â
"I feel like the two matches were really good opportunities for me to practice my game and work on how I see myself playing later in the season," Starr said.
Â
The last time she was at the Riviera Tennis Club, Starr paired with
Maegan Manasse to win the 2015 All-American doubles title. But that memory wasn't at the forefront of her mind today.
Â
"It's a new year, different circumstances," Starr said. "I didn't really think about it too much."
Â
The Cal star will next face TCU's 57th-ranked Donika Bashota – formerly of Washington State – at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
