Florian Lakat won in main draw singles and (with Filip Bergevi) in main draw doubles Friday.
TULSA, Okla. – California's
Florian Lakat won to advance in both singles and doubles on Friday in the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships, with Lakat and fellow senior
Filip Bergevi advancing in main draw doubles, and Lakat and senior
Andre Goransson winning in singles. Bergevi and junior
Billy Griffith lost in main draw singles at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa campus.
Â
In one of the first matches of the day, Griffith, ranked 61st, took on Georgia Tech's fifth-ranked and third-seeded Christopher Eubanks in the main draw singles round of 32, with the Bear falling, 6-2, 6-3.
Â
"Eubanks served really well today," Cal head coach
Peter Wright said. "Billy had a couple of chances, but at the end of the day, he struggled to keep up with the power Eubanks put into his serve and forehand. Overall, a very good week for Billy, as he picked up four quality wins in singles as well as two doubles wins."
Â
The 77th-ranked Bergevi, who like Griffith had a 9 a.m. CT start in the round of 32, lost to Stanford's fourth-seeded and sixth-ranked Tom Fawcett, 7-5, 6-2.
Â
"Filip got off to a quick start, but Fawcett started to find his rhythm late in the set," Wright said. "Filip's serve has been solid all week, but I think her percentages were down a bit in this match. For the week, Filip had four quality wins in singles and in some very tough conditions. He came back later in the day to play extremely well in the doubles with
Florian Lakat."
Â
Ranked 13th in singles, Lakat beat East Tennessee State's 47th-ranked David Biosca, 6-4, 6-1, to reach the round of 16. Lakat later teamed up with Bergevi in the main draw doubles round of 16, and the second-seeded and second-ranked Cal duo defeated Georgia Tech's 14th-ranked pair of Eubanks and Carlos Benito, 7-6(3), 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals.
Â
"Florian dominated with his serve today, serving a dozen aces en route to a fairly clinical win," Wright said of Lakat's singles victory. "When he plays with an offensive mindset, he's very tough to beat. He carried that momentum into doubles where he and Filip played one of the best matches I've seen them play this year."
Â
Playing in consolation singles, the fourth-seeded and 17th-ranked Goransson knocked off South Carolina's 30th-ranked Gabriel Friedrich, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
Â
"Andre did an outstanding job of bouncing back from his loss in singles yesterday," Wright said. "He showed tremendous stamina and focus in his singles today against an opponent who spent most of the day at the baseline. Andre attacked really well, and I think he's really improved how he finishes his points at the net."
Â
The Saint Francis Health System Men's All-American Championships end with the finals on Monday.
