Nancy McDaniel Named To WGCA Hall Of Fame
BERKELEY --- California women's golf head coach
Nancy McDaniel has been selected as one of the newest members of the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Hall of Fame, the organization announced today. McDaniel will be inducted as the 49th member of the WGCA Hall of Fame on Sunday, December 11, 2016 during the organization's Induction Ceremony at the Planet Hollywood Resort in Las Vegas.
The founding coach of the Golden Bears program, McDaniel has held the post in Berkeley since the 1995-96 season and is in the midst of her 22nd campaign. McDaniel has led Cal to 17 consecutive NCAA Regionals appearances (2000-16) during her tenure, advancing as a team to the NCAA Championships nine times (2001-06, 2011, 2014-15) and finishing in the top five three straight years (2004-06).
Some of McDaniel's other accomplishments as Cal's head coach include: winning a pair of Pac-10/12 championships in 2003 & 2012; winning the 2013 NCAA Central Regional title; coaching the Bears' first conference (Vikki Laing, 2003) and NCAA (Sarah Huarte, 2004) and NCAA Regional (Sophia Sheridan, 2005 West) champions in consecutive years; and helping Cal garner over 20 Pac-10/12 First or Second Team selections, more than a dozen All-American nods, more than 75 conference and national academic honors.
For her efforts, McDaniel has earned numerous Coach of the Year awards, including honors from the Pac-10 (2001, '03), WGCA (2003), and Golfweek (2002-03), among others.
WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT COACH MCDANIEL
"I continue to admire Coach McDaniel as a person and in all that she has accomplished with Cal Women's Golf. She will be one of very few coaches in the WGCA Hall of Fame that has been the founding coach of their program; and has built the same program to a place of consistent excellence. I am very proud to have played for Coach McDaniel and equally proud to coach alongside her in the Pac-12. Â She is incredibly deserving of this honor and I look forward to being there for her induction this December."
- Ria Scott, University of Oregon Head Coach / Former Cal Bears (2000-03)
"Having known Nancy in every way, from recruit to student-athlete to coach and colleague, I am quite sure the best and most fortunate way that I know her is as a friend. To have had the pleasure of having her on my team; where she was an All-American, a leader, and a passionate Husky, is something I am very lucky to say. Coaches generally don't develop lifelong relationships with all of their former players and those that we do always have a special place in our heart. One of the things I love the most about Nancy is that she is so very humble; she has a knack for deflecting praise that surely belongs to her. She is always quick to compliment others rather than "tooting her own horn." No one is more deserving of this prestigious honor and I am so very happy for her. Cal is fortunate to have her as their head coach."
- MaryLou Mulflur, University of Washington Head Coach / McDaniel's collegiate coach at UW (1984-88)
"I am excited for Coach McDaniel and her induction into the WGCA Hall of Fame. This award couldn't go to a better ambassador for us coaches and for all of women's college golf. As a player, She challenged me and pushed me to reach my full potential. Without her guidance and encouragement, I would not have been able to achieve the success that I had during my career at Cal. Her ability to get her players to buy in to her culture is something I really admire. As a coach, I now know how hard that is to do."
- Sarah Glynn, University of San Francisco Head Coach / Former Cal Bear (2001-04)
