BERKELEY - Grant Mullins and Kameron Rooks scored 16 points apiece to lead California to an 81-73 victory over Cal Baptist in an exhibition game Thursday at Haas Pavilion.
Rooks added eight rebounds and shot 6-of-9 from the floor against the Division II school that won its conference title and was ranked 14th nationally last season. Mullins, a graduate transfer, was 6-for-11, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range.
"It was great because you go through all of the summer workouts and all of the preseasons, so it's good to finally get into a real game and see what all of that hard work goes into," Mullins said. "It still think we have a lot of stuff to fine tune, but it was just really fun to get out there with all the guys."
Â
The game also marked the Haas debuts for newcomers freshmen
Charlie Moore and
Don Coleman, who combined for 17 points and four steals.
Â
The Golden Bears played without preseason All-American forward
Ivan Rabb, who did not dress for the contest.
Â
"Ivan injured his foot during a scrimmage, but he's considered day-to-day," head coach
Cuonzo Martin said.
Â
Cal opened the game on a 15-2 run, keyed by seven points from senior
Stephen Domingo, who finished with 12 points. Senior
Jabari Bird also reached double figures with 11 points on the night.
Â
The Bears were able to turn Cal Baptist's 12 turnovers into 23 points. Â Cal also held the Lancers to 40 percent shooting from the floor and 7-of-21 from 3-point range. Cal, meanwhile, sank 9-of-23 from long distance.
The Bears open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 11 vs. South Dakota State, with tipoff at 7 p.m. in Berkeley.
