Lakat Wins In National Indoor Opener

Florian Lakat posted a straight-set victory in his singles opener on Thursday at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. But the Golden Bear and fellow senior

Andre Goransson also fell in main draw singles at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Lakat ranked 13th, knocked off Texas Tech's 95th-ranked Jolan Cailleau, 6-3, 6-3, in the round of 32. Goransson, ranked 17th, lost to Arkansas' seventh-seeded and 11th-ranked Michael Redlicki, 6-1, 6-4.
Bergevi and Lakat had a bye in the doubles round of 32 and then took on Valparaiso's 55th-ranked Jeffrey Schorsch and Charlie Emhardt in the round of 16. Seeded No. 1 and ranked second, the Bears lost in an upset, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0(9).
On Friday at 4 p.m. ET, the Cal duo will move into the consolation bracket quarterfinals to see some familiar faces in North Florida's Jack Findel-Hawkins and Lasse Muscheites. The Bears beat the UNF pair in the final of the Saint Francis Health System All-American Championships on Oct. 10 to qualify for national indoors.
Also on Friday, in the main draw singles round of 16, Lakat will play fourth-seeded and 43rd-ranked Nuno Borges of Mississippi State at 9 a.m. ET. In the consolation singles round of 16, Goransson will play the 55th-ranked Shawn Hadavi of host Columbia at noon ET.
