FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – California won in consolation singles and doubles on Friday at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. But Golden Bear senior Florian Lakat fell in main draw singles at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
 
Lakat, ranked 13th, lost to the fourth-seeded and 43rd-ranked Nuno Borges of Mississippi State, 7-6(8), 6-7(4), 6-4, in the round of 16. Over in the consolation bracket, fellow Cal senior Andre Goransson won his round of 16 match against Columbia's 55th-ranked Shawn Hadavi, 6-2, 6-3.
 
In the second-round consolation bracket, the second-ranked and top-seeded pair of Lakat and senior Filip Bergevi prevailed against North Florida's Jack Findel-Hawkins and Lasse Muscheites, 7-6(3), 7-6(3). Bergevi and Lakat also defeated the UNF duo in October in the final of the Saint Francis Health System All-American Championships to advance to national indoors.
 
On Saturday, Goransson will face Northwestern's 44th-ranked Strong Kirchheimer at 10:30 a.m. Bergevi and Lakat will play Oklahoma State's top-ranked and fourth-seeded Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe in the semifinals at a time TBA.
