FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – California posted two doubles victories in the consolation draw on Friday in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The Golden Bears also lost twice in singles on Friday, one day after winning twice in singles and losing twice in doubles at national indoors.
Â
In second-round consolation doubles quarterfinals Friday, the third-ranked and third-seeded team of Cal seniors
Denise Starr and
Maegan Manasse topped Star Makarome and Alexandra Solovyev of host Columbia, 6-4, 6-2. Junior
Karla Popovic and sophomore
Olivia Hauger notched a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory over Duke's Samantha Harris and Ellyse Hamlin.
Â
"We were really aggressive," Starr said of the win over the Lions. "We came out and started off strong, made a lot of first serves and also looked for poaches a lot at the net. We were really active up there because a lot of balls went through the middle."
Â
"In the doubles, we definitely looked much more comfortable today," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus added. "We played with a better flow in both matches. They're excited to get to play again tomorrow and keep getting more match play here in New York.
Â
"It was pretty fun for a while here, when we had Olivia and Karla on one court and next to them Florian (Lakat) and Filip (Bergevi, of Cal men's tennis) and next to them Maegan and Denise. They were cheering each other on, all were successful, and that was great."
Â
In the consolation doubles semifinals, both slated for Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET, the Cal seniors will play Baylor's Elizabeth Profit and Blair Shankle, while the younger Bears will face Michigan's Kate Fahey and Alex Najarian. Cal has faced Najarian before at national indoors, as Starr and Manasse beat Michigan's Najarian and Emina Bektas in the 2014 national indoor consolation final.
Â
In main draw singles on Friday, both Manasse and Popovic faced talented, top-five opponents, with Manasse playing North Carolina's fourth-seeded and top-ranked Hayley Carter, and Popovic battling Ohio State's top-seeded and third-ranked Francesca Di Lorenzo, who is the defending champion at national indoors. Manasse, ranked seventh, lost to Carter, 6-2, 6-2, while Popovic, ranked 90th, fell to Di Lorenzo, 6-0, 6-4, in the third-year Bear's first singles loss of the season.
Â
"We had the reverse of yesterday today, since we did very well in our doubles," Augustus said. "Also I was really pleased with the singles. We competed well. Maegan's only had a few matches this fall so far, and she's progressing nicely. Hayley's a tough opponent. Maegan played well and keeps getting better every match.
Â
"It was a great opportunity for Karla to play the defending champion of this event. They had a really great match. Karla learned a lot. She was not familiar with Di Lorenzo's game. It was fantastic tennis. Both Maegan and Karla got better from their matches today."
