Story Links

LIHUE, KAUA'I – Cal (288, E) is in second place following the first round of action Wednesday at the John. A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by Hawai'i at the par-72, 6,991-yard Wailua Golf Course. The Golden Bears trail first-round leader Texas (276, -12) by 12 strokes heading into the event's final 36 holes to be played Thursday and Friday. Cal has won the event each of the last five years and is the only team to have won it more than three consecutive times in its 40-year history.

Collin Morikawa continued his impressive freshman campaign Wednesday with an opening-round two-under par 70 that has him tied for fifth place three shots behind first-round leader Beau Hossler of Texas (67, -5).

KK Limbhasut (71, -1) is one shot behind Morikawa in a tie for 10th, while defending champion Shotaro Ban (72, E) is another shot back of Limbhasut in a tie for 16th. Sebastian Crampton (75, +3) and Cameron Shaw (75, +3) are the other Cal players in the lineup and tied for 43rd.

The John A. Burns Intercollegiate will continue with 18 holes of action Thursday before concluding with another 18 holes Friday, with a shotgun start each day at 10:30 am PT/8:30 am HT.

DETAILS/NOTES
● Morikawa posted three birdies that all came after his single bogey on the par-four 12th with his round highlighted by a chip-in birdie from 10 feet on the par-three 17th and a birdie on the 451-yard par-four fourth. He also had a birdie on the par-five 13th. Morikawa started his shotgun round on the ninth hole.

● Limbhasut spent most of the opening round in a battle near the top of the leaderboard before bogeys on his final three holes. He was four-under par through his first 15 holes after birdies on the par-five 10th and 13th, the par-three 17th and the par-four sixth before the three straight bogeys on the par-three seventh, par-four eighth and par-five ninth. Limbhasut started his shotgun round on the 10th hole.

● Ban started his round with birdies on two of the first three holes on the par-five 10th and par-four 11th. He picked up another birdie on the par-five first but his three bogeys on the par-four 15th and fourth, and par-three seventh left him even for the round.

QUOTES
● “Texas is a good team and it's a lot to make up 12 shots on them but overall we played pretty well and there are a lot of good teams behind us.” – Steve Desimone

● “Today was a pretty steady day for me. As for the team, I thought we played solid for the first round but gave away some shots coming down the stretch. If we minimize the errors from today and take advantage of the par-fives we'll give ourselves a better chance to catch up to Texas.” – Collin Morikawa

● “I think we played very well today up until the end. I gave up three strokes and Shotaro gave up two so we could have been close to Texas by finishing the round stronger. I played great up until my last three holes. The key for me tomorrow is to put myself in good position off the tee so I can attack more pins.”

● “In terms of my play, today wasn't really special. I didn't hit the ball that well, but I grinded and hung in there with my short game. As for the team we played pretty well, but we just have to sharpen up on finishing stronger and the par-fives, and hopefully we will catch Texas.” – Shotaro Ban

● “It's a great feeling to be the defending champ, but I know that the field is much stronger than last year and the players are really good so I will need to play even better than I did last year to have a shot at repeating.” – Shotaro Ban
