No. 3 Bears Split Two More At UCI Invitational
IRVINE – Junior center Emily Loughlin scored five goals – including a game-high four in a 9-6 victory over No. 5 UC Davis – as the No. 3 Cal women's water polo team split two more games at the UC Irvine Invitational on Sunday.
Three of Loughlin's goals against the Aggies in the Seventh Place Game came after halftime, when the game was knotted at 2-2. The Bears scored four unanswered goals in the third quarter to pull away.
Loughlin added another goal during a 7-5 loss to No. 7 Michigan. The Bears (15-3) got off to a strong start against the Wolverines, as senior Sierra Smiley and sophomore Carla Carrega scored goals to give Cal a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. After Michigan tied it up at 2-2, Loughlin got on the board to put the Bears back in front. But the Wolverines then scored four in a row to take command of the game.
Carrega scored three goals in the two games. Smiley finished with two against Michigan while freshman Sarah Siepker registered a pair of scores against UC Davis.
Cal junior goalkeeper Madeline Trabucco made 11 saves in the two games.
The Bears will be back in action next Saturday as they take on UC Davis and Santa Clara at the Davis Challenge.
