LAS VEGAS, NV – Cal (296-289-304 – 889, +25) finished 11th at the conclusion of the 54-hole Southern Highlands Collegiate at the par-72, 7,374-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club on Wednesday. USC (292-280-297 – 869, +5) held on for a four-stroke victory to lead a 15-team field that included 11 squads that started the event ranked in the top 25 of at least one national poll. Oregon (304-297-287 – 888, +24) was the only team under par in Wednesday's final round and finished 10th one stroke ahead of the Golden Bears.
“It was a tough day no doubt about it,” said associate head coach Walter Chun. “The last few days we haven't really had our 'A' game. The course was set up super tough today and the course just won. It exposed our weaknesses from tee to green. But this was the toughest golf course that our guys will ever play so I'm not going to put too much stock into it. A course like this is an anomaly in college golf. It's like playing in the U.S. Open and there's only one U.S. Open that the pro players have to deal with so I kind of associate it with that.”
Shotaro Ban (74-74-75 – 223, +7), KK Limbhasut (74-72-77 – 223, +7) and Collin Morikawa (74-72-77 – 223, +7) all tied for 27th to pace the Bears. Sebastian Crampton (74-71-81 – 226, +10) tied for 47th while Cameron Shaw (78-74-75 – 227, +11) tied for 51st.
Florida freshman Sam Horsfield (69-70-70 – 209, -7) was the individual medalist four shots clear of his closest competitor.
After trips to Hawaii, Mexico and Las Vegas over the last three weeks, Cal will now be off for three-plus weeks before returning to action April 2-3 at the Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Arizona State at ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
“The guys need a little bit of a break because we've been on the road so much,” Chun said.
