Cal Rewrites Record Book in Finale
DAVIS, Calif. – Heading into the regular-season finale with a top 15 regional qualifying score, California women's gymnastics looked to protect its standing with a strong road score. The No. 14 Golden Bears turned in a strong showing and then some, tallying the highest score in school history, a 197.500, to win the UC Davis triangular Friday evening in Davis, Calif. The Bears finished ahead of the hosting Aggies (195.975) and Sacramento State (195.425).
The program-high 197.500 helps Cal secure a 196.555 RQS and a spot at the Pac-12 Women's Gymnastics Championship's session featuring the conference's top four teams for the first time since the conference expanded its championship event to a two-session format.
The Bears rode season-high team totals on every event to their record-breaking finale, including the highest beam total (49.35), second-highest floor total (49.45) and third-highest bars total (49.475) in school history. Cal's 49.225 on vault matched a season-best.
Cal swept every event title, with three different Bears picking up first place between the four events. Sophomore Toni-Ann Williams took the uneven bars (9.925) and floor (9.95) crowns, sophomore Arianna Robinson won vault (9.90) and junior Jessica Howe took gold on beam (9.95).
Cal made a statement quickly with its second-highest floor score in school history and a season-best 49.45, a score that included two career-highs and a pair of season-high totals. Williams led with a season-high and meet-best 9.95, and sophomore teammate Robinson added a season-best of her own with a 9.875. Howe's career-high 9.875 was her third of 2016, and Draghi punctuated a stellar first rotation with a career-best 9.925, besting her previous high of 9.90 set earlier this season.
The strong scoring carried over to vault, where yet again the Bears landed a season-high team total, a 49.225. Junior Desiree Palomares led off with a season-high 9.85. A trio of season-bests followed Palomares' opening effort, including season-highs from juniors Amber Takara (9.80) and Emily Richardson (9.85), plus a career-high 9.90 from Robinson for her first vault title.
Cal's bar rotation saw five of its six competitors hit highs, including four career-highs. Richardson started the Bears off by matching her career-best 9.85, and all three Bears that followed her also notched career-highs of their own – Takara (9.90), freshman Sofie Seilnacht (9.90) and Howe (9.925). Williams' 9.925 was a season-high to help her to the bars crown. With four scores at 9.90 or better, Cal soared to its third-highest score on the event in school history at 49.475.
With a 148.150 heading into the final rotation, the Bears would need just a 48.85 to break the 197 mark for the first time all season, while a 49.20 on beam would match the program's all-time high. Like they had all night, Cal offered up that and more, finishing the night with their highest beam score in school history – 49.35. The event saw two Bears put up scores above 9.90 as Palomares matched her career-high 9.90 and Howe drew a unanimous 9.95 for a new personal best and the beam crown. Richardson added her own career-best 9.875 in her second outing on the apparatus, besting her debut of 9.85 last week.
