Williams Rewarded with First Specialist Honor

SAN FRANCISCO  – Sophomore Toni-Ann Williams posted a pair of season-high totals en route to two event titles to earn Cal's first-ever Pac-12 Specialist of the Week honor, the conference announced Tuesday.

Williams helped launched the Golden Bears to their highest score in program history, a 197.500, in Cal's win over UC Davis and Sacramento State on Friday. On floor, she scored her second 9.95 of the season, and she earned Cal's first 9.925 on bars since notching the same score in March of her rookie campaign. Both scores helped the Bears to top-three team totals on the events in program history – marking the third-highest uneven bar team score (49.475) and second-highest floor total (49.45). Williams also tallied a 9.775 on vault.

Currently Cal's only active all-arounder, Williams has missed the beam lineup for the last two weekends after suffering from walking pneumonia last week. The Randallstown, Md. product is balancing both in-season training for her collegiate team while also preparing for the upcoming Olympic Test Event in Rio de Janeiro in April as a representative for Team Jamaica.

With the Specialist of the Week honor added to her trophy case, Williams owns a program-best 10 Pac-12 weekly honors, including six Freshman of the Week and three Gymnast of the Week nods. This is her third honor in 2016, adding to two earlier Gymnast of the Week laurels this season. She is one of just two Pac-12 gymnasts in conference history to earn at least one of each of the three weekly honors, joining Stanford's Elizabeth Price.

A gymnast of the week has been selected every week of the season since 2001. The Specialist of the Week award was added in 2008 and Freshman/Newcomer of the Week was added in 2013.
