Tarrago Earns Olympic Berth
Cal women's water polo student-athlete Roser Tarrago earned a berth in the 2016 Summer Olympics when her native Spain defeated The Netherlands 10-7 in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Olympic Qualification Tournament on Saturday in Gouda, The Netherlands.
This will be Tarrago's second straight trip to the Summer Olympics. She helped Spain capture the silver medal at the 2012 Games in London.
Spain secured this year's berth by finishing in the top four at this week's tournament. The event will continue through Monday, but the dramatics have been settled. With the top four advancing to the Olympics, the quarterfinals become the signature round of the tournament because winners advance to the semifinals and take the top four spots.
Tarrago scored two goals Saturday, including a pivotal one in the fourth quarter after The Netherlands had cut an 8-5 deficit to 8-7. She has been a potent goal-scorer for the Bears during the first two years of her Cal career – having registered 104 goals during her first two seasons. She was named an ACWPC All-American each of her first two years at Cal – including a second team selection in 2015.
Tarrago took a redshirt season in 2016 to train with the Spain National Team.
Tarrago becomes the third Cal women's water polo student-athlete to punch a ticket to the 2016 Summer Olympics. Dora Antal and Anna Illes qualified in January after Hungary won the European Championships. Antal played in the 2012 Summer Olympics as well, helping Hungary reach the Bronze Medal Match. Antal and Illes, who have each also completed two seasons at Cal, are also redshirting the 2016 season to focus on international play.
The Golden Bears came very close to qualifying four more women's water polo student-athletes for the Olympics, as countries that feature Cal players each lost by one goal in the quarterfinals. Canada, which has incoming freshman Emma Wright and alums Kelly McKee and Katrina Monton, fell to Italy 8-7. Meanwhile, incoming freshman Eleni Xenaki and Greece suffered a heartbreaking 13-12 setback to Russia in a penalty shootout.
