Ben Braun Receives Guardians Of The Game Award
BERKELEY – Former Cal men's basketball coach Ben Braun will be recognized during a ceremony at the Final Four as one of five recipients of a Guardians of the Game Award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
Braun will be presented the Guardians of the Game Award for Leadership at the AT&T NABC Guardians of the Game Awards Show on Sunday, April 3 in Houston. The other award-winners are Charlie Brock of Springfield College (Advocacy), Dr. Oliver Eslinger from Cal Tech (Education), and Presbyterian coach Gregg Nibert and his wife, Peggy (Service).
Braun guided the Golden Bears from the 1996-97 season through 2007-08 and compiled a 219-154 record over 12 seasons. He ranks second in school history for number of victories. Braun took Cal to the NCAA Tournament five times, including the Sweet 16 in 1997 when he was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year, and to three National Invitation Tournaments with an NIT title in 1999. He coached a pair of Pac-10 Players of the Year in Ed Gray (1997) and Sean Lampley (2001), and his student-athletes were named first- or second-team Pac-12 All-Academic 11 times. Braun previously coached at Siena Heights University and Eastern Michigan and he later coached at Rice after his term in Berkeley.
