REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - The Golden Bears opened their season versus No. 9 Stanford and UCLA at the 2016 Pac-12 Challenge hosted by Stanford in Redwood Shores this past weekend. The reigning Pac-12 Champions didn't miss a beat, sweeping all five races against the Bruins and posting three out of five wins versus Stanford.
The varsity eight boat of Hannah Christopher (coxswain), Kendall Chase (stroke), Rowan McKellar (7), Jacinta Edmunds (6), Dorethee Beckendorff (5). Charlotte Siering (4), Charlotte Passot (3), Charlotte Wesselmann (2), and Sarah Schwartz (bow) saw first place finishes against both Stanford in the morning (6:15.6) and UCLA in the afternoon (6:33.8). The Bears also saw victories in the second varsity eight (6:22.9) and the second varsity four (7:44.10) against the Cardinal.
Later in the afternoon Cal claimed victories in all five races against the Bruins. The second varsity eight finished with a 6:48.6, the varsity four finished with a 7:55.4 both finishing ahead of UCLA by over 50 seconds each.
The Bears look to build off this momentum at the San Diego Crew Classic this weekend to be held in San Diego, Calif. The Bears will then head back to Redwood Shoes following the Lake Natoma invitational April 16, to face Washington on April 23 and the Cardinal again on April 30
