DAVIS – Juniors Stephanie Mutafyan and Emily Loughlin each scored three goals as the No. 6 Cal women's water polo team defeated Santa Clara on Saturday at the Davis Challenge.

In an earlier game, sophomore leading scorer Carla Carrega netted three goals, but the Bears fell to No. 8 UC Davis, 8-6.

The Bears (16-4) fell behind 2-1 early on against the Broncos, but then scored seven unanswered goals to take command. Mutfayan had two of her goals during the stretch, and Cal took an 8-3 lead into the half.

After the teams exchanged goals to begin the third quarter, the Bears closed out the game with four unanswered scores – two by Loughlin – to win easily.

Carrega scored at least three goals for the eighth time this season against the Aggies, who broke a 6-6 fourth-quarter tie with a pair of late goals to pull out the win. The Bears led 5-4 after a goal by Pippa Saunders at the 4:13 mark off the third quarter, but UC Davis scored two in a row to go in front. Carrega scored with 5:32 left in the game to tie it up, but the Aggies got the eventual game-winner 14 seconds later.

The Bears will play their home opener next Saturday, as they open MPSF play against No. 10 San Jose State at 1 p.m.
