Limbhasut Leads, Cal Second At Pac-12's
SALT LAKE CITY – Cal's KK Limbhasut (66-66 – 132, -10) is on top of the individual leaderboard and the Golden Bears are second as a team at the Pac-12 Championships after the first 36 holes of play Friday at the par-71, 7,209-yard Salt Lake Country Club. Stanford (352-336 – 688, -22) is five strokes ahead of Cal (350-343 – 693, -17) with 36 of the 72 holes remaining in event co-hosted by the Pac-12 and Utah. The Bay Area rivals ran away from the field while third-place USC (356-348 – 704, -7) is the only other team under par.
"I feel like I played very smart today," Limbhasut said. "I stayed conservative when it was windy early on and took advantage when the wind died down. I am happy for the team. We have been working very hard the entire season and it is great to see that we have a chance to win the conference."
"KK has really been on a tremendous roll," head coach Steve Desimone said. "When he gets it going he has a tendency to keep it going."
Limbhasut's back-to-back rounds of five-under 66 equaled his collegiate low.
"To keep your concentration not just through 36 holes but through the elevation and some wind [is tough], but when good players get going that confidence flows and they just have a tendency to keep playing well. I think he's got a good chance to keep right on going."
Five of the six players in the Cal lineup are in the top 20 with Limbhasut being joined by Sebastian Crampton (67-71 – 138, -4) in a tie for sixth, Collin Morikawa (74-66 – 140, -2) in a tie for 12th, Jamie Cheatham (71-70 – 141, -1) in a tie for 18th and Shotaro Ban (72-70 – 142, E) in a tie for 20th. Cameron Shaw (75-74 – 149, +7) is also competing and tied for 45th.
The event continues Saturday and Sunday with 18 holes of play each day. Saturday's first tee time off both the first and 10th tees is at 10 am CT, with the top three teams playing together in five threesomes off the first tee starting at 11:06 am.
