BERKELEY – Sophomores Carla Carrega and Kindred Paul each scored two goals but the No. 6 Cal women's water polo team fell to No. 2 UCLA 7-5 on Sunday in the Third Place Game of the MPSF Tournament.

The teams exchanged goals during a 31-second span in the first quarter and the Bruins added another to lead 2-1 at the end of the period. Paul netted a goal on a 6-on-5 at the 5:37 mark of the second quarter to tie the game at 2-2.

But the Bruins scored on three straight possessions during the second half of the second quarter to lead 5-2 at the half.

Junior Emily Loughlin scored with 3:12 left in the third period to make it 5-3, but UCLA answered just over a minute later to push its advantage back to three goals.

The Bears (21-10) made a run in the fourth quarter. Carrega scored on a penalty shot to cut it to 6-4, and Paul scored her second goal to trim the deficit to 6-5 with 3:25 to play. But the Bruins put it away with a 6-on-5 goal with 44 seconds remaining in the game.

Cal will now wait to find out if it earned a berth in the NCAA Championships. The selections will be announced on NCAA.com on Monday at 5 p.m. PT.
