Hudson, Montano Named Pac-12 All-Century
BERKELEY --- Sheila Hudson and Alysia Montano, two of Cal's most decorated women's track & field student-athletes, have been named to the Pac-12 Conference's All-Century team. The league first made the formal announcement Monday evening on Pac-12 Network.
Hudson and Montano are a part of the conference's 51-member team that was voted on by a combined panel of 35 coaches, former athletes, administrators and media members. The top two vote getters in 19 events automatically qualified for the squad with the remaining 12 spots, including ties, being selected from a wildcard ballot consisting of the third, fourth and fifth place vote getters in each event.
Of note is the fact that 38 of the 51 selections to the All-Century team are Olympians - with both Hudson and Montano holding that prestigious distinction.
Hudson (1986-90) excelled during her tenure in Berkeley, winning six NCAA titles (four triple jump, two long jump), earning eight All-American honors, claiming a pair of Pac-10 titles, and setting Cal's long jump (22-1.00) and triple jump (46-0.75) records that still stand. Four of Hudson's six NCAA crowns came during her dominant run in 1990 as she won long jump and triple titles at the indoor and outdoor championships. Hudson was named Cal's Pac-10 Athlete of the Decade from 1986-96. Hudson also found success outside of a Cal uniform: she has won nine total USA triple jump national titles (four outdoor, five indoor), competed in the inaugural triple jump competition at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and served as a sportswriter, college coach and administrator. Hudson was inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.
Montano (2005-08), who competed at Cal as Alysia Johnson, crafted her reputation as an elite runner during her time as a Golden Bear. Montano was a six-time All-American, two-time NCAA champion (2007 indoor/outdoor), two-time Pac-12 champion & NCAA West Regional champion (2007-08) and the 2008 Pac-10 Women's Track Athlete of the Year. Montano still holds Cal records in the indoor and outdoor 800 meters and is part of Cal's record holder indoor and outdoor 4x400 meter relay teams. Montano has earned six USA Outdoor titles in the 800 (including her 2007 title as a junior), won a bronze medal at the 2010 World Championships and finished in the top five in the 2012 London Olympics.
