JOHNSTOWN, PA – While the world's top golfers were battling Saturday at the 2016 U.S. Open at the Oakmont Country Club just over 60 miles away, Cal sophomore Collin Morikawa was tearing up the Sunnehanna Country Club with an eight-under par 62 that was one off both the course record and his personal best. His final-round 62 led him to a three-stroke victory at the prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur three strokes better than Cal junior teammate KK Limbhasut (67-69-66 – 202, -8) and Garrett Rank (69-67-66 – 202, -8). Cal junior Sebastian Crampton (73-70-74 – 217, +7) also played in the event and finished 61st.

“This entire week was spectacular,” Morikawa said. “Minimizing my mistakes was the biggest part in leading me to this win. Other than the second round when I had a few mental mistakes, the rest of the golf was very patient and steady.”

“It takes a very special player to shoot 62 anytime, but it takes an extra special player to do that in the final round,” said retiring Cal head coach Steve Desimone. “That's what great players do. They score in the final round. That's how you win tournaments.”

Morikawa hit all 18 greens in regulation Saturday and had eight birdies without a bogey including a career-best four birdies on the course's five par-three holes (5, 7, 10, 16). He also birdied a pair of par-fours (2, 8) and par-fives (11, 15).

The event was shortened to 54 holes due to rain that suspended Thursday's play before the second round could be completed.

The victory was Morikawa's fourth amateur win following previous victories at the 2013 Western Junior Championship, 2015 Trans-Mississippi Championship and 2016 Silicon Valley Amateur. The Trans-Mississippi and Sunnehanna are considered major national amateur events, while the Western Junior is a major national junior amateur event and the Silicon Valley a local amateur event.

Morikawa is coming off a tremendous 2015-16 freshman season at Cal in which he became the school's first player to ever be named to the nation's All-Freshman team by the Golf Coaches Association of America. He was also selected Division I PING All-West Region, Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, first-team All-Pac-12, Co-Team MVP and Cal's Newcomer of the Year.

“Collin played well all year for us and was one of the best players in the country,” Desimone said. “This puts an exclamation point on that to win one of the biggest amateur events of the year.”

Morikawa is scheduled to play as an amateur in the Web.com Tour's Air Capital Classic presented by Aetna next Thursday-Sunday, June 23-26. Morikawa qualified for the event by winning the 2015 Trans-Mississippi Championship and will be playing in a professional event for the first time.

“It will be something different than everything I've played in before,” Morikawa said. “I'm looking forward to the experience and hoping the solid play this week transitions into next week.”

"It's exciting and fun to watch," Desimone said. "He's just getting started. He's got a great career in front of him. We're going to enjoy a lot of great golf out of Collin Morikawa over the years."
