Cal Affiliates Fall Shy In U.S. Open Qualifying
DALY CITY, CA/POWELL, OH – Current Cal player Collin Morikawa and former Golden Bears golfers Shotaro Ban and Michael Kim fell short in their attempts Monday to make the field for the 2016 U.S. Open during sectional qualifying events.
Morikawa and Ban both played in a sectional qualifier at Lake Merced Golf Club and The Olympic Club in Daly City, Calif. Morikawa shot two even-par rounds with a 72 in the morning at Lake Merced and a 71 in the afternoon at Olympic, missing a playoff for the last of six spots in the field of 100 by six strokes. Ban fired a two-under par 69 in the morning at Olympic and was in contention for a qualifying spot after 18 holes before a three-over par 75 at Lake Merced in the afternoon.
Kim fell four shots shy of a six-player playoff for the final five qualifying spots in a sectional qualifier at Wedgewood Golf & Country Club and Kinsale Golf & Fitness Club in Powell, Ohio. Kim was also in contention for a qualifying spot after a two-under par round of 68 in the morning at Wedgewood before a two-over par 72 in the afternoon at Kinsale.
Max Homa was also scheduled to play in the same sectional qualifying event as Kim but was unable to because of travel difficulties following his Web.com Tour event that ended Sunday in the Dominican Republic.
U.S. Open sectional qualifying is a one-day 36-hole event that is the final stage before U.S. Open hopefuls get to the championship itself. This year there were 12 sectional sites – 10 in the U.S. that took place Monday, as well as one each in England and Japan that took place May 23 and May 30, respectively. Nearly 600 players who advanced through local qualifying and hundreds of others that were exempt were looking to qualify for the U.S. Open in what is often referred to as “Golf's Longest Day”.

Two former Cal players – Byeong Hun An and James Hahn – are in the field for the 2016 U.S. Open to be played June 16-19 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa. An and Hahn have each played in one previous U.S. Open with Hahn in 2012 and An in 2015. Both qualified for the 2016 U.S. Open by being in the top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking as of May 23.
