New Clear Bag Policy for Cal Football Games
BERKELEY – A new clear bag policy designed to enhance safety and security for fans attending games at California Memorial Stadium will be in effect starting with the home opener vs. Texas on Saturday, Sept. 17.
In light of recent world events and with the recommendation of the UC Police Department and other security experts, Cal is implementing a plan the mirrors that of many NFL and Major League Baseball stadiums, including all of those in Northern California, and the majority of Pac-12 schools.
Beginning this fall, clear backpacks and bags will be allowed inside the stadium, provided they (and the contents inside them) meet defined specifications.
Each person attending a game will be allowed to bring in one large clear bag – either a one-gallon Ziploc-style bag or a 12'' by 6" by 12" clear bag – plus a small clutch.
While fans are still encouraged to arrive early to enter Memorial Stadium so they can be seated before kickoff, the new policy is expected to speed entry into the facility by allowing stadium staff to be more efficient in checking bags. Clear bags can be searched easily and quickly and greatly reduce faulty bag searches. The plan also supports the Department of Homeland Security's "If You See Something, Say Something" campaign.
Exceptions will be made for patrons with diaper bags or medical needs. In such cases, fans should use the far left entrance at each gate where security personnel will examine and approve the items.
While there has been a change in the bag policy, the permitted and prohibited items list remains the same from last season.
