Golden Bearsâ Duo Take Morning Matches Before Falling In Round Of 16

KK Limbhasut and
Collin Morikawa both won their Round of 32 matches Thursday morning before having their U.S. Amateur runs end with afternoon losses in the Round of 16 at the Oakland Hills Country Club South Course.
Limbhasut and Morikawa never trailed while cruising to easy Round of 32 victories with Limbhasut a 4 and 3 winner over Cristobal Del Solar and Morikawa taking a 5 and 4 victory over Doug Ghim. Limbhasut keyed his win with a trio of birdies that gave him the par-four seventh and 10th holes, as well as the par-five 12th. Morikawa never looked back after taking a decisive early lead by making birdies on the par-four first and par-five second holes.
Both players fell behind big early in their Round of 16 losses with Limbhasut eventually losing to Nick Carlson in 19 holes and Morikawa being defeated by David Boote, 2 and 1.
Limbhasut dropped three consecutive holes to Nick Carlson with his bogeys on the par-three third and par-four fourth after Carlson had birdied the par-four second. Limbhasut got back to all-square after Carlson bogeyed the par-four fifth and eighth as well as the par-three ninth. On the back nine, Limbhasut would twice go one hole up after a Carlson bogey on the par-five 11th and Limbhasut's birdie on the par-three 15th. Limbhasut would remain one up until his double bogey on 18 allowed Carlson to tie the match and birdie the 19th hole to win.
Morikawa bogeyed the second hole to fall behind early and never led in his loss, squaring up the match only once when Boote bogeyed the fourth. After falling three holes behind, Morikawa did to get to within one after birdies on the 10th and 12th but bogeyed the par-five 14th to give one hole back before halving the next three and running out of holes.
"It was a fabulous run by KK and Collin," said
Walter Chun, Cal's Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf. "I mentioned to them that the better they get and the deeper they get into contention in big championships, the more it will hurt and I know this one hurts. But it is better that they put themselves in a position to content and get hurt than never contend and never get hurt. Their days will come."
