Bears Begin 2016 Campaign At USF Invite
BERKELEY --- Saturday's University of San Francisco Invitational will mark the official start of the 2016 season for the California men's and women's cross country teams.
The 24th iteration of the event will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the Women's 6K race and end with the Men's 8K competition at 10:15 a.m.
Between both teams, Cal has won three of the last four team events over the last two years and 10 of 28 races overall since 2002. The men's squad has won four team titles (2002, '09', 14'-'15) while the women have claimed six team championships (2006, '08, '10-'12, '15)
Individually, the Golden Bears have won five women's and three men's titles, with current junior
Bethan Knights (17:29.10) and graduated senior
Chris Walden (24:24.50) claiming first place in 2015.
Any team victories for the Golden Bears Saturday would be historic for head coach
Shayla Houlihan, who will be coaching the team in her new position for the first time after being elevated to head coach during the spring.
"After a couple weeks of training, the team is looking forward to some outside competition. I'm glad the long build up to a big racing season is over and I'm excited to see what the teams can do together after a summer apart. Everyone looks strong, ready to improve and prepared to work toward the goals we have set," Houlihan said
