Win Over Johns Hopkins Caps Perfect Road Trip
PRINCETON, N.J. – A successful trip to the East Coast drew to a close for the Cal men's water polo team with another dominant effort as the Bears trounced Johns Hopkins 16-2 to leave the Princeton Invitational with a perfect 4-0 record.
Cal adds Sunday's win to earlier victories over No. 11 Princeton, George Washington and St. Francis in New Jersey. In each match, an early start propelled the Bears to a lead they wouldn't give back and Sunday was no different as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one period. A pair of goals by
Johnny Hooper and one by
Nicholas Carniglia combined with penalty shots by
Farrel South,
Thomas Carroll,
Vassilis Tzavaras to give the Bears the advantage.
The second period featured more of the same. Stellet, Hooper,
Jordan Hoover and
Nick Bisconti all scored to push the score to 10-1 at halftime. That lead grew to 15-1 by the end of the third period and a goal by
Safak Simsek closed out the scoring in the fourth. Hooper led the way with a match-high four goals while Hoover added three, Bisconti and Stellet had two and Caroll, South, Tzavaras, Carniglia and Simsek each had one.
Freshman
Bernardo Carelli drew his first start in goal and made nine saves.
Kevin Le Vine got the assignment in the second half and made seven saves. Next up for the Bears is a weekend trip up Interstate 80 as they head to UC Davis on Sept. 17 and 18 for the Aggie Roundup. The 2016 home opener is set for Sept. 23 when Cal kicks off the three-day Mountain Pacific Invitational at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
