Hoover Named MPSF Newcomer Of The Week
BERKELEY - On the heels of an opening weekend in which he scored nine goals in his first four collegiate matches, Cal men's water polo player
Jordan Hoover has been named the Newcomer of the Week by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and KAP7.
A redshirt freshman from nearby Moraga, Calif., Hoover opened his career with a strong showing at the Princeton Invitational. He tied for match-high honors with three goals against George Washington, then added three more the next day against St. Francis. On the final day of competition, Cal's freshman attacker finished strong with three goals against Johns Hopkins.
Hoover's strong weekend was one part of an overall impressive showing by the Golden Bears. Cal went 4-0 to begin the season, including an 18-8 victory over No. 11-ranked Princeton.
Johnny Hooper led the team with 12 goals and for his efforts earned Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honors from the Cal Athletic Department.
The Bears return to action in California this weekend when they head to Davis to take part in the Aggie Roundup. Play begins Saturday at 7 a.m. against Cal Baptist and continues at 3 p.m. against Santa Clara. On Sunday, Cal takes on the host Aggies at 10:40 a.m. before finishing the weekend with a 1:20 p.m. match against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
