Bears Off To Strong Start At Aggie Roundup

DAVIS, Calif. – A return to California yielded much the same result as the No. 3-ranked Cal men's water polo team enjoyed one week earlier in New Jersey as the Bears scored convincing wins over No. 16 Cal Baptist and No. 20 Santa Clara on the first day of the Aggie Roundup hosted by UC Davis.

Cal (6-0) returns to action Sunday at 10:40 a.m. when it squares off with the host Aggies at Schaal Aquatics Center. The Bears wrap up their weekend in Davis with a 1:20 p.m. match against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Cal 15, Cal Baptist 5

A 7 a.m. start time proved the Bears are capable of bringing a good effort at the crack of dawn as Cal jumped out to a big lead early and cruised against the Lancers.

A 5-1 lead after one period established Cal's advantage right away, and a pair of goals came thanks to a 6 on 5 advantage. That lead grew to 8-1 by halftime and the Bears got a chance to give everyone playing time for the remainder of the game.

Johnny Hooper led the way on the scoresheet with four goals while sophomore Timothy Simenc and freshman Safak Simsek added two apiece. Seven more Bears scored one goal each, with Chandler Jarrels, Luca Cupido, Nick Bisconti, Thomas Carroll, Connor Reid, Vassilis Tzavaras and Chase Hamming each finding the net. Hamming's goal was his first as a Golden Bear.

Cupido made his 2016 debut against the Lancers after returning from the Rio Olympics and the junior picked right up where he left off, adding four assists and three steals in the win. Three Bears saw time in the cage, with Lazar Andric starting and making six saves. Kevin Le Vine stopped one shot and Bernardo Carelli made three saves.

Cal 17, Santa Clara 4

Another balanced offensive attack carried the Bears to another dominant victory as they closed the day with a victory over the Broncos.

As has been Cal's custom so far this season, an early lead allowed the Bears to take control right away. Pedro Stellet, Hooper, Simsek and Jarrels all scored in the first period to give Cal a 4-1 lead and the Bears moved even further ahead with six more goals in the second period. Effort didn't wane in the second half, and Cal outscored Santa Clara 7-1 after halftime to close the day strong.

Hooper and Simsek led the offensive charge again in the day's second game, each scoring four goals in the victory. Stellet scored twice and Jarrels, Cupido, Nicholas Carniglia, J.D. Ratchford, Connor Reid, Tzavaras and Hamming chipped in with a goal each.
