DAVIS, Calif. – A competitive contest in the morning gave way to a decisive victory in the afternoon as the No. 3-ranked Cal men's water polo team earned wins over No. 12 UC Davis and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to finish the Aggie Roundup with four wins in hand.

With Sunday's results, Cal improves to 8-0 on the season. The Bears return to Berkeley next weekend to host the Mountain Pacific Invitational against some of the top teams in the nation. Action begins Friday at both Spieker Aquatics Complex and Northgate High School in Walnut Creek. The Bears will kick off tournament play against Whittier College on Friday at 3:50 p.m. at Spieker.

A close contest through two periods tilted more towards the Bears in the second half as Cal never trailed in beating the host Aggies.

Two  goals from Luca Cupido and one from Vassilis Tzavaras helped Cal take a 3-2 lead after a period, and the Bears extended the lead further by halftime as goals from Safak Simsek, Pedro Stellet, Johnny Hooper and Jordan Hooper pushed the score to 7-4 at the midway point.

Cal continued to battle a game Davis squad in the third period, outscoring the Aggies 2-1 in the frame, and the Bears separated further in the fourth with goals from Farrel South, Hooper, Connor Reid and Cupido providing the final margin. Cal kept the pressure on Davis throughout the match, outshooting the Aggies 40-27.

Cupido led Cal offensively with a season-high four goals and assisted on two others. Hooper added three as the only other Bear in double digits. When the Aggies did get chances, Lazar Andric was there to provide the last line of defense as Cal's goalkeeper stopped 13 shots and added two steals.

Cal 27, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5

After taking about an hour off between matches, the Bears finished their stay in Davis with another dominant victory as the goals came fast and furious in a win over the Stags.

Cal wasted no time in jumping out to a lead, building a 5-2 advantage by the end of the first period. Over the next eight minutes, the Bears put the game away, building a 13-4 margin by halftime. With nearly everyone on the roster getting a chance to make their mark, Cal only got stronger from there as the Bears kept adding goals en route to the lopsided win.

The final stats were certainly impressive as nine different Bears scored multiple goals. Simsek, Mikey Williams, Reid, Timothy Simenc, Chase Hamming and Jordan Hoover each scored three in the victory while South, Hooper and Conor Neumann each had two. Kevin Le Vine drew the starting assignment in the cage and made three saves before Bernardo Carelli played the second half and stopped two shots.
