Cal Tied For Eighth At Maui Jim Invitational
Morikawa Moves Up 26 Spots Into Tie For 11th
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Cal (285-284 – 569, +1) moved up one spot to eight place Saturday at the conclusion of the first two rounds of the inaugural Maui Jim Invitational being played at the par-71, 7,147-yard Mirabel Golf Club.
Collin Morikawa (71-66 – 137, -5) jumped up 26 spots into a tie for 11th after his five-under par round of 66 and will begin Sunday's third and final round seven shots behind second-round leader Luis Gagne (65-65 – 130, -12) of 36-hole team leader LSU (270-271 – 541, -27).
"Today was a great round for me," said Morikawa, who registered seven birdies Saturday after having five on Friday. "I knew yesterday that I played solid golf and just got unlucky so if I kept playing the same way today a low score would come. Thankfully, I was able to keep the ball in play and make some putts for birdie."
Morikawa, who started on the 10th hole, picked up his seven birdies on a pair of par-five holes (17, 2) and five par-fours (12, 18, 3, 5, 9).
"Colin posted a really good round today, and he hung tough when he didn't have his best," said
Walter Chun, Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf. "Eric (Mina) and I could tell he was determined to put up an under-par round today and that he certainly did."
A full recap will follow.
