Bears Battle In Bay Area Saturday
TIBURON, Calif. – While California senior
Florian Lakat and three younger Golden Bears played on day two of the Battle in the Bay Classic on Saturday in the City, seniors
Andre Goransson and
Filip Bergevi competed in qualifying singles in the Tiburon Challenger some 25 minutes to the north.

Both Swedes – playing at the Tiburon Peninsula Club – won in Saturday's first round of qualifying in the USTA pro circuit tournament. Goransson, a wild-card qualifier, defeated American Perry Gregg, 6-2, 6-4, while Bergevi, another wild-card qualifier, beat American Max Schnur, 6-7(4), 6-4 6-0.

Goransson takes on Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the second seed, and Bergevi plays Ecuador's Emilio Gomez, the third seed, in Sunday's second round.

The Tiburon Challenger singles main draw begins on Monday.

SAN FRANCISCO – At the California Tennis Club on Saturday, the Bears won three matches but lost four and wound up ending their run in the Battle in the Bay Classic.

Florian Lakat, the top singles seed, beat San Francisco's Ryan Marker, 6-3, 7-6(7), in the main draw's round of 16. But USC's Rob Bellamy advanced past the 13th-ranked Lakat due to an injury walkover.

In the doubles main draw, the fourth-seeded Lakat and freshman
Bjorn Hoffmann prevailed over Pacific's Kumara Advally/Jose Chamba, 8-3, in the round of 16. But the Bears lost in an upset to USF's Jerry Lopez/Oliver Poysti, 8-7(6). Also in the round of 16, Cal sophomore
Gunther Matta and freshman
Dominic Barretto fell to USC's third-seeded Bellamy/Logan Smith, 8-0.

Matta also played in the consolation singles bracket, reaching the quarterfinals after Pacific's Tadiwa Chinamo retired with an injury in the third round. But the second-year Bear then withdrew with an injury, with San Diego's Joshua Page advancing to the semifinals.
