Cal Women's Soccer: By The Numbers

This feature originally appeared in the football game program from the Texas-Cal game on Sept. 17.

2016 marks the 35th anniversary of the California women's soccer team. To honor the occasion, here is a look at some of the signature numbers and milestones of the Golden Bear program.

1982: Cal's history in women's soccer began in 1982 with a modest six-game schedule. The Bears and their first head coach Pat Keohane went undefeated, outscoring four opponents - Colorado College, Colorado State, Metro State and Santa Clara - by a 22-3 margin.

311: The heartbeat of any program is the group of student-athletes that comprise the teams that represent it year after year. Since its inception, 311 student-athletes have donned a Golden Bear uniform for at least one season, including the 26 young women in 2016.

122: Academic success is just as important as athletic success at Cal and the 122 Pac-12 All-Academic honors the program has earned from 1993-2015 is a testament to the Golden Bears' dedication in the classroom.

111: Entering the 2016 season, head coach Neil McGuire has won 111 matches in nine seasons with the Golden Bears. A 14-win campaign in 2016 would give McGuire a total of 125 wins and place him ahead of his predecessor, Kevin Boyd, who currently holds the school wins record at 124.

44: The program Cal has faced the most over its 35 seasons is local rival Santa Clara. Including its early season matchup in 2016, the Bears currently hold a 20-17-7 edge in the all-time season against the Broncos, which dates back to Cal's inaugural season.

23: The Golden Bears have reached the NCAA Tournament 23 times, including its current streak of 12 in a row from 2004-15. Nearly a quarter of its postseason matches (nine of 40) have been played in Berkeley.

17: The most victories a Golden Bear team has amassed during a season was 17, which the 2000 team achieved as part of a 17-3-1 record. That Cal team finished second in the Pac-10 (7-2 record) and made its ninth NCAA appearance, reaching the second round.

14: As of 2015, Cal has produced 14 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Americans. Only one Golden Bear - Lesle Gallimore - has earned NSCAA All-American accolades for four years, claiming the honors from 1982-85.

5: Five former Golden Bears have competed in at least one Olympics - Joy Biefeld Fawcett, Brandi Chastain, Mary Harvey, Betsy Hassett and Alex Morgan. Biefeld, Chastain, Harvey and Morgan have all won at least one Olympic gold medal.

3: On three postseason occasions, Cal has reached the NCAA national semifinals - 1984, 1987 and 1988. The 1987 team's 16 victories are tied for the second-most in Cal single season history and also make up the program's longest winning streak.

1: Cal has earned one conference championship in its history, sharing the 1998 Pac-10 title with UCLA and USC after posted a 13-8 overall mark and 7-2 record in league action. Another solitary conference achievement for the Bears was earned just last season, after current senior Arielle Ship was named Cal's first ever Pac-12 Player of the Year as a junior.
