TUCSON, Ariz. – Cal (+20) made the most of windy weather conditions during the opening day of the Arizona Intercollegiate and was in second place four shots behind leader Oregon (+16) when Monday's action was halted due to darkness. The Golden Bears' four-over play during the first 12-14 holes of the second round was the best in the 18-team field and allowed Cal to shave three shots off the Ducks' opening-round lead.

"It's been a while since I've seen conditions so tough," Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun said. "The winds felt like they were blowing 25 miles per hour or more at times. The team managed themselves very well and the Cal community would be so proud of how they hung in there all day."

William Aldred arguably hung in there as well as anybody at two-over par through 13 holes of his second round and three shots behind first-day leader Wyndham Clark of Oregon (-1 thru 14 holes of second round). Aldred had five birdies on the day including both his first and last holes of his second round and a first-round one-over 72 that equaled Collin Morikawa's first round for the best round of the day by a Cal player.

Morikawa and Tanner Hughes are both tied for 16th at six-over par four shots behind Aldred and seven strokes off the lead.

Morikawa was at two-over par through 20 holes before a triple-bogey six on the par-three third hole of his second round. He got two of those strokes back with consecutive birdies on the par-five eighth and par-five ninth but returned those strokes and one more with bogeys on three of his first four holes on the back nine.

Hughes struggled to four bogeys and a double bogey during his first-round 75 and got to seven-over par before two birdies and one bogey over his final six holes gave him a stroke back.

Sean Yu is tied for 33rd after bouncing back from an 11-over par 82 in the first round of his Cal career with a red-hot stretch early in his second round when Yu played holes 6-9 of the course in four-under par going birdie, par, eagle, birdie. The eagle on the par-five eighth was Cal's only one of the day. He gave two shots back over the first three holes of the back nine.

Finigan Tilly also made his Cal debut and is tied for 57th at 13-over par through his first 12 holes of the second round.

Clayton Madey (75-79-80 – 234, +21) also played at the Arizona Medalist Intercollegiate on Monday finishing 19th and wrapping up two days and three rounds of play with the final 36 holes at the Starr Pass Golf Club.

Second-round action of the Arizona Intercollegiate being played at the Sewailo Golf Club is scheduled to resume Tuesday at 7:45 am MT/6:45 am PT followed by third and final-round play.

"There is still lots of golf left," Chun said. "We have put ourselves in a good position and have to keep grinding. If we can do that, we'll be in good shape."
