Cal Closes January with Win at SC United Open
BERKELEY – In only its third meet of the season, California bested a trio of top-20 teams on Saturday in Los Angeles at the SC United Open.
The No. 9 Golden Bears posted a mark of 407.300, their highest team score of the season, to hold off 13th-ranked Arizona State (397.400), 19th-ranked Temple (375.350) and host team and 20th-ranked SC United (350.050).
The Bears found their best team score on the high bar totaling a 72.050 and were led by
Gagik Gharibyan and
Yordan Aleksandrov who both notched 14.650 scores. Cal's team total was one of two 70-plus marks by any team on Saturday, the other coming from ASU on the vault (70.250).
Floor also proved lucrative for the Bears, notching a 69.850 on the apparatus, which was seven points more than SC United, five more than Temple and two ahead of ASU.
Aaron Mah led for Cal with a 14.750.
Mah also won the all-around competition with a total of 81.800, his season-best. The sophomore was the lone all-arounder to surpass the 80-point threshold.
Cal returns home to host No. 12 Iowa on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. (PT).
