TREASURE ISLAND, Calif. – An all-freshman-and-sophomore roster went 3-0 to win Pool A Saturday at the West Coast Collegiate 7s, sweeping through Arizona State, UC Davis and University of San Diego to qualify for the cup quarterfinals held Sunday on Treasure Island.
 
The Golden Bears face San Diego State in their quarterfinal clash at 10:20 a.m. Sunday. The winner of Cal vs. SDSU will face the winner of Central Washington vs. UCLA in the cup semifinals at 1:40 p.m.
 
Other quarterfinal action Sunday at the West Coast Collegiate 7s will see Arizona take on USC and Utah Valley vs. Arizona State.
 
Sunday's championship final is set for 3:40 p.m.
 
Of the Bears' efforts on Saturday, head coach Jack Clark said, "We have so much to learn and experience together, today was good for us. Not good in a 3-and-0 way, good in our-learning-curve-is-steep way."
 
Captained by sophomore Keanu Andrade, the Rugby Bears began their day with a 26-7 win over ASU. Sophomore Christian Dyer scored two tries and went 3-for-4 on conversions against the Sun Devils, then added a try and three conversions as Cal beat UC Davis, 21-7. Freshman Kevin Saunders scored two tries as the Blue and Gold ended their day with a 24-14 win over the Toreros.
 
Sunday is sure to be a stout test for this young squad going into a talented quarterfinal bracket.
 
Following the West Coast Collegiate 7s on Treasure Island, Cal will prepare for its final event of the autumn semester, the PAC 7s conference championship held November 11-12 at the University of Arizona, where the Golden Bears will field their varsity side.
