McLachlan Posts Japan Open Upset

BERKELEY – Former California men's tennis star Ben McLachlan and partner Yasutaka Uchiyama upset the world's third-ranked duo on Thursday to reach the doubles semifinals of the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships. Representing Japan, McLachlan and Uchiyama defeated top-seeded Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau, 7-6(2), 7-6(3), in the professional tournament at the Ariake Tennis Forrest Park in Tokyo.

They will face Santiago Gonzalez and Julio Peralta in the semifinals.

McLachlan joined the Japan team ahead of its Davis Cup World Group playoff matches against Brazil in September. While McLachlan and Uchiyama lost their doubles match to Bruno Soares and Marcelo Melo, 7-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the playoffs, Japan beat Brazil, 3-1, to earn its spot in the 2018 World Group.

In other Golden Bears in the pros news, Andre Goransson and Florian Lakat captured the Tiburon Challenger doubles title on Oct. 1 when they defeated Marcelo Arevalo and Miguel Reyes-Varela, 6-4, 6-4, in Tiburon, California. The two completed their college careers last season.

Filip Bergevi, who also concluded his Cal career in 2016-17, recently competed in a Sweden F4 Futures tournament, falling in the singles round of 32 to Dzmitry Zhyrmont, 6-4, 6-2. In doubles, Bergevi and Christian Samuelsson reached the quarterfinals but fell to third-seeded Zhyrmont and Yaraslav Shyla, 7-6(2), 7-6(2).

The current Golden Bears are competing in two tournaments this week – the Saint Francis Health System All-American Championships and the UCSB Classic.
