BERKELEY — Starting from opposite ends of the four-pool, 12-team open division, California's two evenly divided sides swept their respective sides of the bracket Saturday at the West Coast 7s Saturday at Cal Poly.
 
Senior Matthew Coyle scored three tries, kicked seven conversions (7-of-12) and was named Tournament MVP as the Golden Bears put playing time under the belts of 29 student-athletes across eight matches. The "Cal" side defeated Fresno State, 43-7, and Cal Poly, 31-7, in Pool A, while the "Bears" side beat USC, 24-19, and UC Davis, 26-5, in Pool B. In the semifinals, Cal beat Grand Canyon University, 24-17, while the Bears defeated San Diego State, 31-7.
 
With the traveling squads' top players resting on the bench, the Cal and Bears teams took the pitch one more time outfitted in Blue and White, respectively, for the cup final, which ended in a 21-21 tie.
 
"It's always important to focus on a good start as a team," said Coyle. "This event offered a lot of opportunities for new guys as well as older guys like myself."
 
Among the veterans who played Saturday was Thomas Robles, an All-American who returned from injury to competition for the first time since February. "It was great to be back on the field personally and a valuable experience for everyone on the trip," he said.
 
Underclassmen comprised the majority of both teams. "It was high-intensity," said freshman Desi Streater. "We're just trying to learn how to keep to our pattern. It was exciting to play with the upperclassmen and represent our University today."
 
Back on the bus to Berkeley, the team will be back in the High Performance Center on Sunday, studying film and regenerating as the Bears prepare for their next tournament, the Treasure Island stop for the West Coast Collegiate 7s October 21-22, followed by the PAC 7s conference championship held November 4-5 at the University of Arizona.
