Cal-UC Riverside Postgame Quotes
Â
On game overall:
"It's a tough one. I told the guys before we went out on the floor that we need to do a better job of coming out of the gates ready to go and ready to play. In the exhibition game, I didn't feel we came out that way. It was almost like we were trying to size up our opponent and that's not the way to go. In our scrimmage, same thing, not ready to go from the jump. We ran into that today -- they start off 10-0 and now we are playing catch-up, now we are out of our comfort zone, now we're doing things we normally don't do and we were just kind of scrambled and disorganized. Moving forward, I think they get it now that from the jump we have to do a better job of coming out and taking care of business rather than sizing up our opponent and seeing how hard we have to go."
Â
"I said it along, we're going to go as our seniors go. We are going to be as good as Marcus, Kingsley and Don to a certain degree with him being a junior. Older guys are going to have to be the ones to lead us."
Â
On
Justice Sueing's play:
"Justice showed he can score. He was comfortable out there. He's been out for so long -- close to two months now. One of the bright spots of the game was his productivity tonight. Outside of that, with the freshmen we are still trying to figure out who can give us something when the lights are on. We will see what happens in practice is practice, but who can really step up, make a play, and knock down a shot when the lights are on."

Â
On what Coach Jones expressed postgame:
"We've got to get better, it's as simple as that. I think we were poor offensively in the first-half. We let them score too easy in transition and with our press we were allowing them to pass over the top and we've got to make free throws too. We just have to get better. We can't play like that again."
Â
On team's offense:
"We need to find people to step up offensively, including myself. I only scored five points and I don't know how many (Marcus) Lee scored. We need other people to contribute -- we can't just rely on (
Don Coleman) but we will find a way."
Â
On where team needs to improve in regard to the pressure defense:
"We just need to have quicker instincts to read the defenders' eyes or the offensive player's eyes and just gamble. A press is for gambling. We were being too passive and too steady, it allowed them to pick it apart, so it's new and we will get better as time goes on."
Â
Â
Overall thoughts on the game:
"We dug ourselves a big hole from the beginning, so for any team it's hard to get back from that. We have to work on having better starts and from there we will keep on improving."
Â
On adjusting to being back on the floor:
"It's been a minute since I've played with the injury and all, but I'm glad that I'm back on the court with my guys. Time will tell and we will get back to our efficiency and get back to our offense and defense. I felt comfortable once I got on the court to be honest, but I just need to get back into my rhythm."
