LIHUE, Hawaii – Cal (291-281-288 – 860, -4) wrapped up its best finish of the season Friday by tying for fifth at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by Hawai'i at the par-72, 6,991-yard Wailua Golf Course.
Collin Morikawa (71-66-69 – 206, -10) led the Golden Bears by tying for third place while
Walker Huddy (79-70-69 – 218, +2) fired his second straight sub-par round matching Morikawa's two-under 69 and finishing tied for 32nd. Huddy moved up a whopping 66 spots over his final two rounds.
"We're trending in the right direction and that's a credit to the players," said Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf
Walter Chun. "They are working hard and gaining confidence. We still have room to grow but I like that. It shows we have more within ourselves and haven't peaked."
"Collin and Walker came up big for the team," Chun added. "It's great to have them play well but they need help from the rest of the lineup."
Morikawa, who started his shotgun round on the fourth hole, was in the running for his first collegiate title throughout most of Friday's third and final round especially after getting to 10-under par for the first time following three consecutive birdies on the par-five ninth and 10th holes and par-four 11th. He gave one stroke back with a bogey on the par-four 15th but picked up two shots when he made back-to-back birdies on the par-five first and par-four second before a bogey on the par-three third ended his round.
"It was another solid week finishing tied for third," said Morikawa about his fourth top-10 finish of the season and the 11th in the first 19 starts of his collegiate career. "It was good to see my game get better as the week went on, and it will just give me confidence going into a tough couple of tournaments our next two weeks in Cabo and Vegas. As a team it's always good to get better finishes, but I know there's still a lot more improvement that we all want to see in the next few months."
Huddy's round of three-under par 69 was his best since a three-under par 68 in the second round of the season-opening Gopher Invitational last September and made him five-under over the final 36 holes of the Burns. Huddy started his round with a bogey on the par-four sixth but got to four-under for the round after making birdie on five of his next 10 holes before giving a stroke back with a bogey on the par-three 17th.
"Walter gave me a little advice to change my setup during the second round and I started hitting it a lot better," Huddy said of advice he took from his head coach. "Then I started to see some putts drop and felt like I got in a really good rhythm the rest of the tournament."
Tanner Hughes (T40th, 73-71-75 – 219, +3),
Sean Yu (T68th, 70-77-77 – 224, +8) and
William Aldred (T78th, 77-74-75 – 226, +10) were also in the Cal lineup, while
Clayton Madey (T22nd, 70-71-75 – 216, E) played in the event as an individual and had the second-best finish of his career.
No. 4 Virginia (268-283-284 – 835, -29) held on for a four-shot victory over No. 18 Texas A&M (276-281-282 – 839, -25) for the team title while the Aggies' Chandler Phillips (67-66-68 – 201, -15) was the individual medalist.
Cal returns to action February 26-28 at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate hosted by Arkansas at the Querencia Golf Club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
