Bears Drop Heartbreaker To No. 6 Oregon

BERKELEY – The California men's basketball team led Wednesday's game against No. 6 Oregon for almost 37 minutes Wednesday night, but the Ducks ultimately prevailed 68-65 on Dillon Brooks' tiebreaking 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds to go.

It was a heartbreaking defeat for the Golden Bears (18-9, 9-6 Pac-12), who led by as much as 16 points early in the second half.

Even for an accomplished defensive team like Cal, its first half performance was something to remember. The Bears held the Ducks' high-flying offense to just 16 points – the fewest Oregon has scored in a half this season. Cal led 30-16 at the break and extended its advantage to 16 points after scoring the first two points of the second half.

The Bears still led 49-34 after a dunk by Jabari Bird with 9:50 to play, but Oregon began to slowly slice into the lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers brought the Ducks to within 59-58 with just under three minutes left, and Oregon claimed its first lead of the game at 62-61 with 1:48 remaining.

Grant Mullins' tough hanging runner in the key pushed Cal back in front with 1:21 to play, but Brooks scored to put the Ducks back in front once again.

After Oregon's Tyler Dorsey made one of two free throws to give Oregon a 65-63 lead, Cal's Ivan Raab followed his own miss to tie it with nine seconds remaining.

Brooks, who scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the second half, was well-defended by Stephen Domingo but still managed to drain the 3-pointer over his outstretched hand just before the final buzzer.

"It was a hard-fought game," Cal coach Cuonzo Martin said. "It was a very emotional locker room. It was a tough one for us."

Bird led the Bears with 20 points and nine rebounds while Raab had his 15th double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Mullins had 11 points and four assists while Kameron Rooks added 10 points and five rebounds.

"Obviously, if we would have won, it would have been a signature win for us," Bird said. "That's what we've been looking for. But now that we lost, we have to put it behind us and move on to the next three games, finish off conference and take one game at a time."

The Bears return to the Haas Pavilion court for the final time this season Friday against Oregon State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on Fox Sports 1. Seniors Sam Singer, Roger Moute a Bidias, Stephen Domingo, Grant Mullins and Bird will be honored in a special pre-game ceremony.
