Men’s DMR Wins At MPSF Indoor Championship

Brendel, Parker And Martinez Add Series Of Personal Bests

SEATTLE – The Cal men's distance medley relay team was a winner Friday night to highlight action for the Golden Bears on the opening day of the 2017 MPSF Indoor Championships at Dempsey Indoor. A Cal team of Thomas Joyce, Paramveer Chohan, Eugene Hamilton III and Garrett Corcoran checked in with a time of 9:34.11 to finish nearly four seconds ahead of second-place UCLA.

Tyler Brendel is in fourth place in the heptathlon with 3,038 points after the first four of seven events were contested Friday with Brendel posting indoor personal bests. He began the heptathlon with the Bears' other victory Friday in the event's 60 meters in a time of 6.92 to edge Colorado's Isaiah Oliver (6.94). Brendel's long jump of 22'8 that was nearly two feet longer than his previous personal best won his flight and finished fifth overall, while he was also sixth in the shot put (41'1.5) and tied for eighth in the high jump (6'2).

Destiny Parker and Lauren Martinez also each had a personal-best performance Friday with Parker finishing second in the women's weight throw (68'6.50) while Martinez tied for second in the pole vault (13'6.25).

Two-sport standout Ashtyn Davis also had a notable performance taking second in the prelims of the 60 meter hurdles with a qualifying time of 7.90 and will compete in the finals of the event Saturday.

"We had some good results tonight highlighted by our win in the DMR and personal bests from Tyler Brendel, Destiny Parker and Lauren Martinez," Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Tony Sandoval said. "We're looking forward to a better day tomorrow."

Cal is in 10th place in both the men's and women's team standings heading into Saturday's final day of the 2017 MPSF Championships when finals are scheduled to be contested in 23 events beginning at 10:30 am PT.
