CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – Cal (304-288 – 592, +24) shaved 16 shots off its first-round score but remained in 14th place after the conclusion second-round action Monday at the prestigious Querencia Cabo Collegiate that features five of the nation's top-10 teams and eight of the top 25.
Collin Morikawa (70-68 – 138, -4) was tied for the lead at one point before eventually dropping into a tie for seventh-place four shots off the pace of second-round leader Steven Chervony of Texas (66-68 – 134, -8).
Morikawa began his shotgun round with a birdie on the par-five 15th before making it three in his first four holes with back-to-back birdies on the par-four 17th and 18th. He would add another birdie on the par-four fifth to get to five-under for the tournament and four-under for the round before giving a stroke back on his final hole when he three-putted from 30 feet on the par-three 14th.
"It was a much smoother day for me," Morikawa said. "There wasn't anything special with all of my birdies coming from 5-10 feet, but my ball striking was solid and I was able to roll a few putts in. If I can just fix a few things with my putting I'll be able to contend with the leaders."
Sean Yu (70-74 – 144, +2) is the next Cal player on the leaderboard in a tie for 29th, while
Clayton Madey (T69th, 80-74 – 154, +12),
Tanner Hughes (72nd, 84-72 – 156, +14) and
Walker Huddy (T77th, 85-78 – 163, +21) are also participating for Cal. Four of the five players in the Cal lineup improved their scores Monday by a combined total of 27 strokes over their first-round showings Monday.
"It was good for our confidence to post a good round today," said Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf
Walter Chun. "Collin led the charge for us today, and that's what great players do, they come up big when needed. We need an even better round tomorrow, and I know the guys understand that as well."
Yu had the wildest round among Cal players Monday as he matched Morikawa's four birdies including one on each of the course's par-fives and another on the par-four 18th, but he also had three bogeys and back-to-back double bogeys on par-four sixth and seventh holes. Madey, Hughes and Huddy each had a pair of birdies.
The Querencia Cabo Collegiate concludes Tuesday with 18 holes of third and final-round action beginning with a shotgun start at 8 am MT/7 am PT. Cal will play in the same group as Mississippi, Rice and five individuals.
