STANFORD – Junior Anna Illes scored five goals to help the No. 4 Cal women's water polo team to a pair of victories Saturday on the first day of the Stanford Invitational.

Illes and reigning MPSF Freshman of the Week Emma Wright each registered three goals in a 13-9 victory over No. 7 Michigan. Earlier in the day, Illes added two scores as the Bears (7-0) pounded No. 16 San Jose State 15-6.

Defending MPSF Player of the Week Dora Antal and junior Kindred Paul each had three goals in the win over the Spartans and finished with four for the day. Senior Emily Loughlin also had a hat trick against San Jose State. Wright scored a goal to help beat the Spartans.

In an anticipated showdown between top-10 teams, the Bears got off to a strong start against Michigan, scoring two goals during the first 1:15 of the game and leading 3-0 halfway through the first period. Cal took a 7-2 lead into halftime and two quick goals by Wright and another by Illes pushed the Bears' advantage to 10-3 with 5:22 to play in the third quarter.

Cal maintained a 13-6 lead with 4:45 left in the game before the Wolverines cut into the deficit for the final margin.

The Bears got off to an even stronger start against San Jose State, scoring the game's first seven goals to lead 7-0 with 4:55 remaining in the second quarter. The Spartans finally got on the scoreboard with 3:23 to play before the half. San Jose State got to within 10-5 at the end of the third quarter but two more quick Cal goals opened up a comfortable lead once again.

The Bears resume play in the Stanford Invitational on Sunday at 9:40 a.m. against No. 18 UC Davis. A win would put Cal in the championship game at 3:15 p.m. The Bears won the Stanford Invitational last year.
