INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - California got off to a good start against Purdue on Friday.
Playing in their opener of the BNP Paribas Collegiate Tennis Challenge presented by Oracle, the top-seeded Golden Bears won the doubles point to lead, 1-0, heading into singles at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. But that's where things got hairy for 10th/13th-ranked Cal. The Bears, who had lost each of their previous three dual matches 4-3, lost three straight in singles to the unranked Boilermakers to trail 3-1.
But 30th-ranked seniorÂ
Andre Goransson won on court one – beating Ricky Medinilla, 6-2, 7-5 – and juniorÂ
Billy Griffith won on court three – defeating Benjamin Ugarte, 6-2, 7-6 – to tie things at 3-3. With the result hinging on court five, Cal juniorÂ
J.T. Nishimura won a pair of tiebreakers to edge Athell Bennett, 7-6(3), 7-6(4), and put Cal on the positive side of a 4-3 result.
In doubles, the teams split on courts one – with Cal's top-ranked
Filip Bergevi and
Florian Lakat winning – and three – with Purdue winning – to set up court two as the clincher. On two, Cal's 54th-ranked Goransson and Griffith beat Medinilla and Ugarte, 6-4, to give the Bears the early lead.
Â
"Today our boys came out with purpose and intensity in doubles," Cal associate head coach
Tyler Browne said. "Give credit to Purdue; they came out motivated in singles and jumped on our guys early. We responded well and fought the heat to come back from a 3-1 deficit."
The temperature got up to 95 degrees in Indian Wells on Friday.
Cal next plays third-seeded Baylor on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the semifinals of the Collegiate Tennis Challenge. This marks the second Bears vs. Bears matchup this season, as Cal beat Baylor, 4-2, in their opener at the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship in February.
