Cal Loses Battle Of The Bears
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – California had already beaten Baylor, 4-2, this season, indoors, but the Golden Bears couldn't duplicate that feat on Saturday outdoors at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. This time No. 6/11 Baylor blanked No. 10/13 Cal, 4-0, in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Collegiate Tennis Challenge presented by Oracle.
Cal beat the BU Bears in the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship in February.
This time, Baylor won the doubles point after Max Tchoutakian and Constantin Frantzen knocked off Cal freshman
Bjorn Hoffmann and junior
J.T. Nishimura, 6-2, on court three and then Juan Benitez and Will Little upset Cal's top-ranked seniors
Florian Lakat and
Filip Bergevi, 6-4, on court one.
In singles, Cal's 14th-ranked Lakat lost to the 15th-ranked Benitez, 6-3, 6-3, on court one to give Baylor a 2-0 lead, then the 81st-ranked Schretter beat the 109th-ranked Bergevi, 6-4, 6-1, on court three to make the score 3-0. Baylor ended the match when Constantin Frantzen topped Cal freshman
Dominic Barretto, 7-6(2), 6-4, on court six.
