BERKELEY -
Andre Goransson completed another 4-3 victory for No. 11 California on Wednesday night, when the Golden Bears rallied to defeat No. 48 Yale under the lights at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The win kicked off a six-match homestand for the Bears, who improved their record to 12-5.
Â
Yale's record is now 14-4.
Cal – ranked 11th in the two national polls – won the doubles point to lead 1-0 and later led 2-1 in singles. But the Bulldogs won the next two matches to take a 3-2 lead.
Â
FreshmanÂ
Connor Heap had a rally of his own on court six, losing the first set but then eventually winning, 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-5, over Yale's Dennis Wang to tie the overall match at 3-3. Goransson lost his first set by the same score as Heap lost his, and Goransson likewise prevailed in three sets, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-1 over the Bulldogs' Ziqi Wang on court two to give Cal the match.
Â
"Tonight was another exciting college tennis match," Cal head coach
Peter Wright said. "Yale did a great job of bouncing back after we won the doubles point, and at one point they really looked to be in control of the match. It took a great effort from
Connor Heap and
Andre Goransson to come back from losing their first sets for us to win this match."
Â
The Bears' last five matches at Hellman have yielded 4-3 results, with Cal winning three of those five. Counting a 4-3 loss at Stanford on March 7, Cal's last six matches in the San Francisco Bay Area have ended 4-3.
Â
On Wednesday in doubles, Cal got off to a good start when the fourth-ranked pair of senior All-Americans
Filip Bergevi and
Florian Lakat beat Yale's Alex Hagermoser and Stefan Doehler, 6-2, on court one. Yale won the next match, as Cal junior
J.T. Nishimura and freshman
Bjorn Hoffmann lost to Tyler Lu and Photos Photiades, 6-4, on court three. Court two also featured Goransson taking on Wang, with the Cal senior and
Billy Griffith – ranked 65th – knocking off Wang and Dylan King, 6-2, to clinch the point.
Â
Hoffman doubled Cal's lead with a 6-3, 6-2 result over Andrew Heller at court five singles.
Â
But the Bulldogs won the next three matches to take their 3-2 lead, until Heap – a late addition to the singles lineup – and Goransson lifted the Bears to victory.
Â
"We need strong performances from our guys in this six-match homestand in order to establish ourselves as one of the top teams in the conference and the country," Wright said. "We face a stiff challenge from Illinois this Saturday and then we start the Pac-12 season, so we're incredibly focused on the process of getting one day better every time we practice."
