Cal Tennis Preps For April 22 Big Slams
BERKELEY – For the first time, both of California's nationally prominent tennis teams will host their Stanford counterparts for the Big Slam on the same day – April 22 – in televised regular-season finales at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
The Pac-12 Networks will broadcast both matches, with the women's beginning at noon and the men following at 3:30 p.m. or directly following the conclusion of the women's match.
The Golden Bear men will celebrate the careers of
Andre Goransson,
Filip Bergevi and
Florian Lakat during the Senior Day ceremony after their match with the Cardinal. The Cal women will honor their seniors – including All-Americans
Maegan Manasse and
Denise Starr – prior to their clash with Washington State on Saturday, April 15, at 12 p.m. at Hellman.
April 22 will include a salute to Cal alumni as part of McManus Legends Day, free hamburgers courtesy of Fuddruckers and a Cal giveaway.
Each team has produced numerous singles, doubles and team conference and national championships and All-Americans through the years. The men – who have been celebrating the 125th year of the program in 2016-17 – have won three team titles. The women – in their 45th season at Cal – captured their first national team title at last season's ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship.
Led by 2016 Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year
Amanda Augustus, the women have won nine of their last 10 matches and compiled a 13-3 overall record (6-1 in the Pac-12). The men – with 2016 Pac-12 Coach of the year
Peter Wright at the helm – have a 15-6 record that includes wins in five of their last seven matches.
Both teams are poised to return to the postseason and perhaps host NCAA matches, meaning that April 22 is not necessarily the last time they'll play at Hellman this season.
