BERKELEY – California completed a sweep of the Washington schools with its 7-0 rout of Washington State on Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The No. 9/16 Golden Bears didn't lose a match much less a set on either day.
Cal improved its record to 15-3 (8-1 Pac-12), while WSU fell to 10-14 (0-9 Pac-12).
Â
Before beating the Cougars, Cal celebrated the careers of seniors
Maegan Manasse,
Denise Starr and
Stephane Lin and grad student
Maya Jansen, who would be playing in the penultimate regular-season match of their careers. All four won matches on Saturday, but it was a sophomore –
Olivia Hauger – who clinched the victory over WSU.
Â
Hauger, ranked 104th, defeated Victoria Matejevic, 6-3, 6-0, at court-four singles to clinch.
Â
She was also part of the duo that clinched the doubles point, as she paired with Lin to beat Ege Tomey and Guzal Yusupova, 6-1, on court three to give Cal the early 1-0 lead. The 51st-ranked pair of Jansen and Manasse also won in doubles, beating Matejevic and Aneta Miksovska, 6-0, on court one.
Â
Manasse, ranked 65th in singles, soon gave Cal a 2-0 lead, as she breezed through a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Barbora Michalkova on court one. Jansen likewise posted a 6-2, 6-1 win, as she knocked off Melisa Ates on court five.
Â
After Hauger clinched, fellow sophomore
Maria Smith beat Tomey, 6-0, 6-4, to give Cal a 5-0 lead. Cal junior
Karla Popovic, ranked 12th, followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Yusupova on court two, before Starr ended the day with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Miksovska on court three.
Â
"I was pleased with both days this weekend," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "We wanted to see how we would respond today after yesterday's win. I was pleased with how we played in doubles. We still will work on longer point situations for singles, and I think we can work on some of our transition shots. But this will lead well into next week. We're looking forward to it."
Â
Cal closes the regular season when it hosts Stanford in the Big Slam on April 22 at noon in a match televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
