Mima Mirkovic, Cassidy Drury-Pullen, Maddie Micheletti and Courtney Springbett will join the Bears for the 2018 season.
BERKELEY – The Cal beach volleyball program continues to evolve and develop its depth with the addition of four new student-athletes, head coach
Meagan Schmitt announced.
Mima Mirkovic, a 5-foot-11 prospect from Irvine, previously signed a financial aid agreement for the Cal indoor volleyball program and will begin competing for the beach program next spring. Meanwhile, Cassidy Drury-Pullen of Santa Barbara, Maddie Micheletti of Hermosa Beach and Courtney Springbett of Santa Cruz have each signed a Statement of Intent to Register and will also play for the Bears in 2018.
The quartet joins Alexia Inman of Manhattan Beach, Jacqueline Ribeiro of Austin, Texas and Caroline Schafer of Orinda, each of whom signed a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period last November.
"These incoming freshmen know that they are entering a program that is still growing," Schmitt said. "They will enter Cal with a responsibility to come in and make an impact right away while still being freshmen and learning what college competition is all about."
Mirkovic is already an accomplished beach volleyball player. In December, she qualified for the 2017 FIVB Under-21 World Championships in Nanjing, China, which will take place July 11-16. She also won the inaugural Queen of the Beach tournament for high school players last summer in Hermosa Beach.
Mirkovic placed third at the 2016 Under-19 World Championships in Larnaca, Cyprus and was a member of the A1 USA Beach Team from 2014-16.
"Mima will make an enormous impact on our program," Schmitt said. "I foresee her becoming a top player. Traveling and competing internationally gives her that exposure to high-level competition. So when she comes in and plays her first college volleyball match, those nerves won't be a foreign experience."
Drury-Pullen, 5-7, has extensive experience in the USA High Performance Program and has qualified for the AVP Junior Nationals and Junior Olympics in the past.
"Cassidy is a fiery little defender," Schmitt said. "She is scrappy in the back court and then can transition to get a kill. I'm really excited to add her to our group of defenders."
Micheletti, 5-9, helped Mira Costa High School win four straight IBVL championships and forge a 62-match winning streak. She won the silver medal at the AAU Junior Olympics.
"Maddie is a very solid, all-around player," Schmitt said. "She's not necessarily flashy at times, but she is extremely well-rounded. When we talk about making your partner better, she always makes her partner better when she's competing."
Springbett, 5-10, was a two-time All-SCCAL honorable mention selection as a middle blocker and helped Soquel High School's indoor team capture back-to-back co-league championships.
"Courtney has a lot of indoor experience," Schmitt said. "We are still pretty defender-heavy with our current squad, so having a player with her kind of size and her blocking experience can help us immediately."
The 2017 Bears, currently ranked No. 20 in the nation, continue their season Friday in a tri-meet with New Mexico and Arizona State in Tempe, Arizona.
